Morrisey suggests that ‘chaplaincy’ has therefore moved outside of its canonical
definition, particularly when the ministry occurs within a non-ecclesial setting. In

response he proposes that the Church needs to properly mandate lay people within
these new ministry situations and he foresees the future Church may ‘most likely be

less clerical’, but certainly no ‘less ministerial’ (1999:276-280).
