Abstract

Converging on Culture: Discerning a Catholic Approach to Ministry within the
Contemporary Police Service

i) Aim

This dissertation aims to examine the opportunities for pastoral support within the
contemporary police service with a view to proposing the key principles of a Catholic

model for ministry. This will be achieved by exploring the cultural landscape of post-
modernism with regard to how it influences policing, defining the theological context

for ministry, and reviewing existing arrangements for pastoral care within the service.
This research will include:

a) A literature review, to establish the philosophical, socio-historical and

theological contexts for ministry within the police service.

b) Questionnaires, to determine the views of Christian police officers and staff

with regard to faith ministry.

c) Personal interviews, to outline the views of ministry practitioners currently
providing pastoral support within the police service.
