Question 7 – If answer to question 6 is yes, what are these barriers?
A significant proportion (45%) of respondents made no response or marked their
answer as ‘not applicable’. This is not surprising given that 52% of respondents did
not feel there were any barriers to seeking support from a chaplain. The other most
significant responses were as follows:
Did not know how to contact a chaplain - 17%
The distant feel / inaccessibility of chaplains - 24%
Did not know about the service - 7%
The lack of presence / inapproachability of chaplains - 10%
The lack of publicity about chaplaincy provision - 10%
Other responses included, not wishing to bring problems to work, little opportunity for
establishing personal relationships with chaplains, issues with confidentiality, and
being perceived as only being there for Christian staff.
