Of those respondents who stated that the police service was a supportive
environment for those of religious faith, a significant number highlighted the CPA as a
positive means of support (50% of those answering yes, or 28% of total
respondents). Being allowed to attend meetings was highlighted as a positive
example of this support. It was also suggested that people within the constabulary
were open to issues of faith and belief, that the organisation was tolerant, and there
were no barriers to those of faith. It was seen as beneficial that chaplains become
involved with the Alpha courses that are held within the constabulary.
Conversely some respondents were more pessimistic. Some respondents perceived
a more negative culture within the service with regard to those who openly express
their religious faith. The organisation was described as dismissive with regard to
religious faith issues, and faith is something that is barely tolerated. The police
service is viewed as a ‘blind man’ in its approach. It is suggested that there is a lack
of understanding that a commitment to faith is central to the identity of some people.
