Ceremony to be held at the flagpole where the Force Standard will be at half-mast.

The chaplain introduces the short ceremony.

Sgt Graham Saville of Nottinghamshire police died on Tuesday, August 29th. Sgt Saville had been called to a distressed person on the railway the previous Thursday and was hit by a train, suffering injuries that proved to be fatal. He was 46.

A minute’s silence is today being held in the Nottinghamshire Force. Across the country, in solidarity and out of respect, other police forces are doing the same – a time for gathering, a time to pause, a time to reflect on Sgt Saville’s tragic death, and on the dangers all police officers and other emergency services personnel face in the course of their duties.

As we gather here this afternoon, to pay respects, we pray for Graham’s family, and his colleagues and friends in their shock, grief and loss. May we, with them, know a healing touch, peace in our confusion, and light in dark times, through the support and care of one another.

Let us still our busy hearts and minds, as we commemorate Graham Saville, in silence now.

At this moment
as we come face to face again with death
let us draw close in love,
travel together in these difficult hours and days
and open our hearts to comfort each other.

Pause

Bless, we pray, all members of the police service,
that we may honour our calling and serve those around us
upholding human rights and according equal respect to all.
Inspire us to standards of fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality
worthy of our calling that our actions may always be just,
our motives pure and tempered with compassion,
and that we may walk humbly with you.
Give us strength and wisdom to protect the weak and vulnerable,
and champion the cause of the innocent;
protect us from harm and in your mercy let peace reign in our country.

May love and peace rest with you,
and those whom you love,
and with those who love you,
today and always.
