Prior to his retirement in 2019 Nigel served for 30 years as a police officer with West Yorkshire Police in the United Kingdom. His experience in the specialised role of Roads Policing saw him develop additional responsibilities as Road Death Family Liaison Officer, Casualty Bureau and Road Death Senior Investigation Officer. He also completed a post graduate diploma in Disaster Victim Identification at the University of Dundee.
Since 2020 Nigel has fulfilled the role of volunteer Chaplain with West Yorkshire Police, supporting the chaplain leadership team and developing training resources for the broader chaplain team of West Yorkshire Police.
Nigel currently serves on the board of Police Chaplaincy UK and shares responsibility for onboarding new members along with administrative support for the board meetings. Nigel’s work across various chaplain sectors and interface with local government contingency planning groups, affords the board a broader view of chaplaincy as it connects with various faith and volunteer groups.
Nigel works as a Chaplain Manager for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association which provides crisis trained chaplains who respond to community crises. He and his team have provided chaplain support to the church response at events as diverse as terrorist incidents in the United Kingdom (Westminster, London Bridge, Manchester), the Grenfell Tower fire and numerous flooding events across the UK. Internationally, Nigel has worked in a chaplain role in Haiti in response to the cholera outbreak, wildfires in the US and terrorism in Belgium.
In response to the Ukrainian crisis, Nigel has provided chaplaincy support and training in Ukraine, Moldova, Germany and Poland.
Educated to degree level at the College of St. Mark and St. John, Plymouth, Nigel studied Theology with English and American Literature. Married, with two adult children Nigel enjoys photography, exercise, eating out and travel.
Nigel is a tutor with Waverley Abbey College and teaches Contemporary Chaplaincy to cohorts of students stepping in to both the regulated and non-regulated sectors.
A committed Christian, Nigel’s ethos is that Chaplaincy is an appropriate and effective means of providing much needed support. This being implemented through empathy, understanding, compassion, a strong foundational training and above all, a pastoral heart for all.
In March of 2024 Nigel was ordained as a Minister of Religion with Churches in Communities International, a commissioning body which provides leadership, resources and accountability to those from the independent church sector who are called to ordination.
