International Day of Prayer for the Emergency Services 2025

Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Emergency Services – a day when people around the world pause to reflect, to pray, and to give thanks for those who serve across policing, ambulance, fire and rescue, coastguard, and other emergency services.

As chaplains, we have the privilege of walking alongside those who serve – offering presence, listening, encouragement, and sometimes prayer.
Today is an opportunity not only to be present for others, but also to take a moment for yourself.

Whether you’re someone who prays, meditates, reflects quietly, or simply takes a moment to think, this day invites us all to hold our emergency services – and one another – in heart and mind.

It’s a chance to:
  • 🕯️ Acknowledge the courage and compassion shown daily by those we       support
  • 🕯️ Honour the cost that can come with the uniform
  • 🕯️ Bring intention, care, and spiritual depth to our role as chaplains
We know that not everyone we serve prays – and not all chaplains pray in the same way. That diversity is one of our strengths. What matters is that we show up with compassion, humility, and presence.

Thank you for the quiet faithfulness you offer every day.
Your work, often unseen, is deeply valued.

Bless we pray all members of the Police Service, that we may honour our calling and serve those around us, upholding human rights and according equal respect to all.

Inspire us to standards of fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality worthy of our calling; that our actions might always be just, our motives pure and tempered with compassion, and that we may walk in humility.

May we have strength and wisdom to protect the weak and vulnerable, and champion the cause of the innocent; protect us from harm, and may peace reign in our towns, country, and world.

Amen

Fish On Fridays

Sometimes we all need time away from the demands of our work.

Fish on Fridays started as a dial-in for people to listen to a light-hearted, reflection on the mood and events of the week from one of our Force Chaplains in Thames Valley Police.

The aim is to encourage us all to enjoy a short wellbeing break, and take time to focus on something non-work and non-Covid related. They are non-religious, so anyone can listen in.

We have recently migrated to MS Teams for 2021, so we can now see each other too, even if it’s a bad hair day. After all, we are in this together! It is important not to feel isolated, especially working at home, so this is a great opportunity to connect with others across the force.

Chaplains Lead Acts of Remembrance

Chaplains from Forces across the UK led small socially distanced acts of remembrance on Armistice Day 2020. Due to current restrictions large gatherings were not possible but police forces marked the important day in Covid compliant ways to ensure those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom were not forgotten.

Durham Constabulary, Hampshire Constabulary, Surrey Police

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
